Within the European Chemistry Partnering (ECP) Summer Summit in September, ORONTEC GmbH & Co. KG will organize a workshop covering the topic of “Sustainability in the Coatings Industry” with the assistance of some partner companies.

Experience showed that when sustainability was discussed amongst our colleagues in the Coatings Industry, immediately the discussion splits up into a huge number of different aspects, with no one dominant topic popping up as THE main factor. All aspects were always valid for themselves, and quite a number of them were not aligned, but rather perpendicular to each other.

The aim of the workshop thus is to set up a holistic view by tackling all aspects simultaneously in small groups. The workshop will be again in the world café format, setting up 4 groups manned with moderators to cover 4 different topics, while all participants will switch round-robin-style between groups.
 

The 4 topics covered will be:

1. Raw materials
2. Processes
3. Coatings lifecycle end-to-end
4. Ecolabel with balanced cost-performance-sustainability triangle

Potential questions to be discussed would be:
Raw materials:

• What contributions can be expected from the raw material side?
• How can start-ups stir up the market?
• Pros and cons of green raw materials

Processes:

• Can efficiency and effectiveness be translated into sustainability?
• Lean is green
• Digitalization to the rescue!
• Definition of waste

Coatings lifecycle end-to-end:

• Where are touchpoints for sustainability improvements along the value chain of paints (from raw material to coated substrate and beyond)?
• Energy, waste, VOC, raw material, recycling, packaging, transport, testing, …

Ecolabel with balanced cost-performance-sustainability triangle

• How could a scoring system be established that enables incorporating the 17 SDGs into the scoring together with cost and performance to get a better comparability between the different ways of rating a coating?
• Is longer protection more sustainable than using green raw materials?

11:00 – 12:00 UTC Workshop “Financing opportunities and trends in the Chemical sector"
hosted by FCF

FCF’s workshop provides an in-depth insight into the various financing opportunities, from early stage venture financings to bank debt financings, of a Chemical company throughout its lifespan.
